Electrical Safety Tips for Older Perth Homes (Pre-2000)

Is Your Home's Electrical System Safe?

If your Perth home was built before 2000, there's a good chance your electrical system doesn't meet current safety standards. While older systems aren't automatically dangerous, they do require more attention and may need upgrading.

Common Issues in Older Perth Homes

Asbestos Switchboards

Many Perth homes built between 1940–1980 have switchboards with asbestos backing panels. These are safe when undisturbed, but must be handled by a licensed asbestos removalist when upgrading. Never attempt to modify an asbestos switchboard yourself.

Missing Safety Switches (RCDs)

Since 2000, WA regulations require safety switches on all power and lighting circuits in new homes. However, many older homes only have them on power circuits — or none at all. Safety switches detect current leakage and cut power in 30 milliseconds, preventing electrocution.

Action: Check your switchboard. If you don't see devices labelled "RCD" or "Safety Switch" on every circuit, get a licensed electrician to install them. Cost is typically $150–$250 per circuit.

Aluminium Wiring

Some Perth homes from the 1960s–1970s used aluminium wiring, which is more prone to overheating at connection points than copper. If your home has aluminium wiring, an electrician can install special connectors (called AlumiConn) to reduce fire risk.

Outdated Power Points

Old two-pin power points without earth connections are a safety hazard. They should be replaced with modern three-pin, earthed outlets. While you're at it, consider adding USB-C outlets in kitchens and living areas.

Warning Signs You Need an Electrician

  • Lights flickering or dimming when appliances turn on
  • Warm or discoloured power point covers
  • Frequent circuit breaker trips
  • Burning smell near outlets or the switchboard
  • Tingling sensation when touching appliances
  • Two-pin outlets anywhere in the home

What an Electrical Safety Inspection Covers

A licensed electrician's safety inspection (around $200–$400) typically includes:

  • Switchboard condition and RCD testing
  • Wiring insulation resistance testing
  • Earth fault loop impedance testing
  • Visual inspection of all accessible wiring
  • Smoke alarm compliance check

Take Action

Don't wait for a problem to reveal itself. If your home is over 25 years old, book an electrical safety inspection. Find a licensed Perth electrician through our directory, or read our detailed electrical safety guide.
