Gas Fitting Regulations in WA: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Gas Safety Is Not Optional

Gas fitting work in Western Australia is strictly regulated under the Gas Standards Act 1972. Incorrect gas work can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, explosions, and house fires. Here's what every Perth homeowner needs to know.

What Requires a Licensed Gas Fitter?

In WA, all gas fitting work must be performed by a licensed gas fitter. This includes:

  • Installing or relocating gas cooktops, ovens, or heaters
  • Connecting or disconnecting gas bayonet points
  • Installing or servicing gas hot water systems
  • Running new gas lines or extending existing ones
  • Converting appliances from natural gas to LPG (or vice versa)
  • Gas leak detection and repair

You cannot legally do any gas work yourself, even something as simple as connecting a gas bayonet fitting. The fine for unlicensed gas work in WA is up to $50,000.

Understanding Gas Compliance Certificates

After completing gas work, your gas fitter must:

  • Issue a Gas Certificate of Compliance (Notice of Completion)
  • Lodge it with Energy Safety WA within 5 business days
  • Provide you with a copy

Keep this certificate — you'll need it when selling your home or if an insurance claim involves gas.

Signs of a Gas Leak

Natural gas is odourless, but an odorant (mercaptan) is added so you can smell it. Watch for:

  • Rotten egg smell near gas appliances or pipes
  • Hissing sound from gas lines or connections
  • Dead vegetation in a line pattern in your yard (underground leak)
  • Higher than normal gas bills without increased usage

What to Do If You Smell Gas

  1. Do NOT turn on/off any electrical switches or appliances
  2. Do NOT use your mobile phone inside the house
  3. Turn off the gas meter at the main valve (if safe to do so)
  4. Open doors and windows
  5. Leave the house and call ATCO Gas emergencies on 13 13 52
